OUR HISTORY

VCD Activities include but not limited to:

    1. Increasing household food security - fish production, handling and preservation training. VCD has supported the construction of boats to be used for both transportation and fishing. VCD has also distributed fishing equipment such as fishing nets, fishing twines and hooks and also trained local fishermen on the Code for Responsible fishing. In addition, the fishermen have been given practical hands on experience in fish rack construction, proper fish drying methods and alternative ways of preparing fish for home consumption.

    2. Emergency food security project in Jonglei - The activity was developed to provide immediate live-saving assistance to meet urgent survival needs of the population of Jonglei County who have for long suffered from endemic conflict and whose situation was in 2006 exacerbated by floods and displacement occasioned by disarmament activities. The activity aimed to address food and NFl emergency needs of 20,000 vulnerable returnees and host community members in Jonglei States by improving their fish productive capacity and health through the provision of fishing inputs and NFI, as well as related Public Health Hygiene Education.

    3. Addressing high and chronic malnutrition - Malnutrition study was supported by Save the Children UK. It aimed at finding out the extent and impact of malnutrition among children in the local communities. congregation as happened during a cholera outbreak on issues of; the importance of hygiene as a tool to life and good health, sanitation, environment cleanliness, and dangers posed by stagnant and dirty water. Hygiene and sanitation education was delivered to households and provision of mosquito nets to 1,100 households was also done.

    4. Rehabilitation of boreholes and water supply - Water supply is essential for life, health and human dignity. It is a basic need for survival. The project is to ensure that all people have safe and equitable access to a sufficient quantity of water for drinking, cooking, personal and domestic hygiene. Public water points are sufficiently close to households to enable use of the minimum water requirements thus VCD is at the fore from in ensuring the above need is facilitated starting with Panyijiar County situated south of Unity state.

    5. Public Health Awareness - the sensitization of the people on matters of HIV/AIDS, Malaria, hygiene and sanitation and child health problems were addressed among the communities in Unity State. Sometimes the trainers used forums such as addressing church.

    6. Provision of Medical services- through support of Primary Health Care Units (PHCUs) and Primary Health Care Centres (PHCCs)

    7. Support Education- such as Primary Schools especially Girls Education and constructions of the class rooms

    8. Increasing agricultural productivity and environmental conservation - Agro forestry training aimed at promoting household livelihoods by ensuring food security and better water utilization methods have so far been conducted. Training on effective and economical methods in agriculture and agro forestry, and hands-on activities such as nursery bed layouts, better seed handling methods, seed propagation and bedding, transplanting, caring for the plants, waste manure preparation, functions of different tools and equipment, and usage of different chemicals have been taught.

    9. Advocacy - Several advocacy meetings aimed at sensitizing the public on development issues have been held on Public Health Awareness. Distribution of medicines and items donated by the government and civil organizations working in the area, community discussions on how to make the community self sustaining in fishing, agriculture, child education and health have also been conducted.

    10. Youth and women empowerment project: This project was initiated by VCD with the overall goal of empowering women and the youths through addressing the socio-economic problems they face with their families. The project sought to establish self-sustaining and community based youth and women�s organisations through organisational capacity building and establishment of a youth centre in Panyijiar County (Ganyliel).
